Trinity 2025

O1 Summer VIII’s Roundup!

Day 1 we were back in a familiar position being chased by St Peter’s M1 and chasing Exeter M1. Peter’s had clearly upped their game from last year, with it looking inevitable that we’d be caught, however we were not going to get bumped! Every time they pushed towards us we’d push harder. We just managed to eek a row over, before all immediately collapsing. Day 2 was a rematch with Peter’s while now chasing Brasenose M1. This time Peter’s threw everything at us, clearly determined not repeat Day 1, and sadly caught us at univ, with us unable to dig as deep as we had on day 1.

Day 3 saw us chasing Peter’s but we were now being chased by Pembroke M2, who we had valiantly held off on Day 4 of Torpids, ending their blades campaign. We went in knowing that this was a row to the head and we’d need to pace ourselves. I think I knew we were safe when Lucy’s encouraging “you’re pulling away from Pembroke” calls turned to genuine surprise “wait you actually are pulling away!”.

Day 4 we were again being chased by Pembroke M2 and were chasing Brasenose M1 once again, after they too had been bumped by Peter’s. Just as we passed univ boathouse, Pembroke M2 was caught by Univ M2 (well done on blades!). With nothing to lose and all to gain the boat descended into a frenzy to catch Brasenose before the finish line, however they were able to hold us off and we sadly rowed over once again. All in all really proud of Lucy and the boys, especially with the performance of the 5(!) novices in the O1. So excited to see what we can do next eights! None of this would have been possible without the patient mentoring of our coach of 2 years Bea, who we will be sadly missing! It’s been a pleasure captaining this side for the last year and I wish all the best to the new captains Felix and James!

W1 Summer VIII’s Roundup!

W1 put on an amazing showing this summer VIIIs, starting the week on bungline 8 in Div 2 and finishing on bungline 11, with our spoons campaign shattered on the last day.

The first day was one of great anticipation, being chased by LMH, with three out of eight of their rowers having been trained by us in Ely! Not our greatest row and potentially the widest line on the river, we got caught just after Donny bridge.

On Thursday we came back with a different energy! With a speedy start we were gaining on LMH and nearly had overlap by Donny bridge, but Merton unfortunately pipped us before we could take our revenge. Despite the defeat, spirits were high…

Onto Friday. It was Somerville Mansfield round two after our tragic encounter in torpids. Liv forgot that the word concede even existed, meaning Somerville went for the contact bump, ramming into my blade and causing our only crab of the week. Luckily it was caught on camera from about 15 different angles.

Saturday we knew we were on for Spoons and only had one goal in mind- make it to Longbridges. Then disaster struck, our rudder was bent (again), so we had to take out our twice as heavy w2. The biggest problem was that our w1 was bowrigged, w2 stroke rigged, meaning MCBC4EVA became CMCBE4AV. Still, once the canon went we gave it everything and had made it nearly to Donny bridge with Peter’s gaining but not quite on us yet. We then see the greatest sight in Bumps- a crab! Peter’s struggle to regain themselves, leading Queens to bump them out and giving us clear water. The rest of the row consisted of us all screaming ‘no spoons’ and some overly excited rate 43 (sorry guys).

Overall I just want to say how I am so so so proud of these girls for the work they put in this week and the whole year. Additionally a massive thank you to Kathleen who has been our greatest supporter and we are so grateful for her coaching. I am so excited to see how much further we can go and our torpids blades campaign starts now!!

On 31 May 2025, Mansfield College Boat Club finished Summer Eights week by brining together current members and alumni to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

Founded in 1965, the club is the largest sporting society at Mansfield College and offers all college members the opportunity to row, regardless of prior experience. Since it was established the club has been run by Mansfield students, and is spurred to success by alumni support.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make this such a special celebration!

💛❤️ Torpids ‘25 O1 roundup ❤️💛

The O1 started the week strong with a surprisingly fast bump on GTC in the gut. A great introduction for the half of the boat (Konrad, Manny, Zac, Tom SR) for whom this was their first bumps race! The quick bump had filled us with hope and the b-word started carelessly being thrown around.

We went into day 2 feeling good… until GTC bumped us… in exactly the same place we had bumped them the previous day. This was capped off by a speedy Wolfson M2 bumping us outside univ. The resultant mood in the boathouse afterwards was tough, not helped by us hearing GTC celebrating in the boat bay next to us (of course we’d done exactly the same thing the day before but it’s fine when we do it okay). Despite this being the absolute low point of Torpids, it’s the day I was most proud of the team for. Especially in seeing how the more senior members, who’ve had their own share of ups and downs, supported the novices in their first loss.

Going into day 3 there was a mix of apprehension and a strong desire to fight back. Our bowman Tom SR had fallen ill, but we were fortunate to have Jude join the boat for the final 2 days in his place. We held off our pursuers Pembroke M2 and, to everyone’s joy, bumped Linacre by rowing past them at boathouse island. After the rowing past ‘incident’ on the womens side with Somerville, Bea decided to leave no doubt about the row-past, with us crossing the stream to pulli in ahead of Linacre.

Going into day 4, we were net zero, with a Pembroke M2 on for blades chasing us and our old frenemies GTC ahead of us. Pembroke went for the quick bump, quickly gaining on us and getting to within a terrifying quarter length as we passed longbridges. A well timed call for maximum power from Lorenzo spared us the bump and we started to pull away… only to bump GTC in front of boathouse island. Cue celebrations.

I’d like to thank Bea for her wonderful coaching and for coxing us for the first 3 days and James K gets a shoutout as our faithful bankrider. To the GTC men - it was a pleasure and you guys are all great sports. Bring on summer eights.

⭐️ Mansfield Boat Club to Introduce Gondolas for its 60th Anniversary ⭐️

💛❤️ Torpids ‘25 W1 roundup ❤️💛

W1 enjoyed a varied week in div2 this Torpids, beginning as the sandwich boat (between the two halves of the division due to reduced racing) and finishing 10th in the division. This drop of three places was the result of two row overs on the first day, an attempt on Bea’s life from Exeter and a possibly-celebrated-too-early row past from Somerville on the second day, a row over on the third day and a bump from St. Antony’s on the last day.

Overall there was an incredible show of rowing from all 9 members of the boat this week, with Charlotte providing her skills with very minimal warning on two occasions! And, while most of the boat ended the week with an unidentified illness, Izzy H actually survived four out of the five races with it. We couldn’t have raced without the incredible sacrifices of Bea to cox us on the first three days which we are so grateful for. Additionally we had the brilliant coxing of James on the Saturday who helped the boat hold off St. Hugh’s while I watched anxiously from the bank due to the aforementioned unidentified illness. Kathleen provided long distance coaching for the first two days but then graced us with her presence and unbeatable positivity and encouragement for the second half of the week; she truly has provided incredible coaching this term and has been such an asset to MCBC.

Also I would like to make an honourable mention to the members of the W2 and Greenfield, as well as Sam who was supposed to cox the W1 who were all sadly unable to compete in this Torpids. The entire women’s side has shown great commitment and resilience and I look forward to Summer VIIIs next term!

- Yesterday, MCBC entered a men’s and a women’s crew into autumn fours 🍁

Heading into Div5 with a crew made up mainly of novices, Day 1 saw a speedy start, only to eventually be caught by an overpowered Reuben grad boat whose participation in our Div was suspicious to say the least. We got our deserved bump within seconds off the bunglines against St Anthony’s on Day 2, and headed into Day 3 expecting a long row to the Head. The row over was completed after what can only be described as a ‘girthy push’ (IYKYK) despite Exeter’s valiant efforts behind us. The final day saw us come within a quarter of a length of bumping Somerville, but they bumped out with a few mega strokes before Merton caught us in the gut. Overall, a week to be very proud of and a good competitive start to many Mansfielders’ rowing careers.

Despite getting bumped on the first three days they always rowed back with huge smiles and had only good things to say in the debriefs. With a different crew everyday and some of them having been in a boat for the first time just 2 weeks before racing, they did absolutely amazingly and truly deserved their bump on Saturday (even if they did not handle it with decorum…). They had the help of some amazing subs (including an ex-blues rower!) who contributed to both the speed and the amazing energy - MCMCBCBC forever!!

After Bruno was struck down with illness just days before the first day of racing, the we thought that our dream of escaping spoons would be over before it began until we were saved by a last minute sub from the Blues boat, Lenny. After bringing us within feet of bumping St Johns on the first day, ambitions were high with the full crew back in action for the remaining races. Under the coaching of Bea, the O1 managed to go from being the lowest crew in the division to a serious competitor in just one year. And though we never caught St John’s or Brasenose, completing the course four times, spirits remained high in the crew and we can proudly say we gave it our all.

Under the coaching of Bea, the O1 managed to go from being the lowest crew in the division to a serious competitor in just one year. And though we never caught St John’s or Brasenose, completing the course four times, spirits remained high in the crew and we can proudly say we gave it our all.
